there are many types of detectors developed. now is mostly electronic and able to collect huge amount of data.

there are 3 main principles on particle detection.

  1. by the ionization between particle and gas
  2. by the excitation of energy level
  3. by the detection of photon

There are 5 main categories:

  1. Scintillator – small time resolution but only rough spatial resolution
  2. Gaseous counter/wire chamber – small spatial resolution, combine with magnetic field can measure momentum
  3. Semiconductor counter – good energy and spatial resolution
  4. Cherenkov counter – particle identification by transition radiation
  5. Calorimeter – total energy at very high energy.
i will talk more about them when i feel i understand. :)

here is a diagram from WIKI, which summarized
